Privacy Policy
Last updated 31 August 2026This policy explains what personal data Opul collects when you use our command-line tool and website at opul.dev (the “Service”), why we collect it, and the rights you have over it. We are committed to handling your data in line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (“UK GDPR”) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
1. Who we are
Opul is a service operated by Berkway Group Limited (“we”, “us”, “our”), the controller of the personal data described in this policy. For any privacy question, or to exercise your rights, contact us at support@opul.dev.
Berkway Group Limited is registered in England and Wales (company no. 16591862). Registered office: 3rd Floor, 86–90 Paul Street, London, EC2A 4NE. Company contact: support@berkwaygroup.com · 020 3488 174.
2. What data we collect
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Account data | Your GitHub identifier and username, email address, and access token issued when you authenticate. |
| Content you publish | The demo videos, poster images, titles, and metadata you upload to create a hosted link. |
| Billing data | Subscription plan, and billing details processed by our payment provider. We do not store full card numbers. |
| Usage data | Link view counts, download counts, log data, IP address, browser and device information, and error diagnostics. |
| CLI telemetry (optional) | Anonymous, aggregated information about how the command-line tool is used. This is collected only if you opt in, and you can turn it off at any time. |
The Opul CLI records the web application you point it at on your own machine. That recording is produced locally; it is only transmitted to us if you choose to publish it.
3. How and why we use your data
| Purpose | Lawful basis (UK GDPR Art. 6) |
|---|---|
| Creating and operating your account and hosted links | Performance of a contract |
| Taking payment and managing subscriptions | Performance of a contract |
| Securing the Service, preventing abuse, and keeping logs | Legitimate interests |
| Understanding usage and improving the Service | Legitimate interests |
| Responding to your support requests | Legitimate interests / performance of a contract |
| Anonymous CLI usage analytics (if you opt in) | Consent |
| Complying with legal and tax obligations | Legal obligation |
Where we rely on legitimate interests, we have balanced those interests against your rights and freedoms. You may object to this processing at any time (see section 8).
4. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with service providers who process it on our behalf under contract, including:
- GitHub — for sign-in and authentication.
- Stripe — for payment processing and subscription management.
- Cloud hosting and storage providers — to run the Service and store your account data and published videos.
We may also disclose data where required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Opul, our users, or others. If our business is sold or reorganised, data may be transferred as part of that transaction.
5. International transfers
Some of our providers process data outside the UK. Where that happens, we ensure an appropriate safeguard is in place — such as an adequacy decision by the UK government, or the International Data Transfer Agreement (or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses) — so that your data receives an equivalent level of protection.
6. How long we keep it
We keep account data for as long as your account is active. Published videos are retained until you delete them or your plan’s link expiry applies (for example, links on the Free plan expire after 48 hours). When you close your account we delete or anonymise your personal data within a reasonable period, except where we must retain certain records (such as billing records) to meet legal obligations.
7. Cookies
We use only cookies and similar technologies that are strictly necessary to run the Service — for example, to keep you signed in and to keep the Service secure. Because these are essential, they do not require consent. We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
8. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- access a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased in certain circumstances;
- restrict or object to our processing of your data;
- data portability; and
- withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent (this does not affect processing already carried out).
You can download a copy of the data we hold for your account at any time from your account settings (an “Export data” option). To exercise any other right, email support@opul.dev. We will respond within one month. There is normally no charge.
9. Automated decision-making
We do not make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you based solely on automated processing, and we do not use your data for profiling.
10. Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encryption of data in transit, access controls, and signed, time-limited URLs for uploading and serving videos. No system is completely secure; if a breach affects your rights we will notify you and the ICO where the law requires.
11. Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please contact us first so we can try to resolve it. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK supervisory authority, at ico.org.uk.
12. Children
The Service is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you.
